In 1965, Shrinivas Kharche laid the foundation for the Madras regional office of M/s. Master Sathe & Kothari, one of India’s premier architectural firms of the time. This move marked the beginning of a significant chapter in South India’s architectural landscape. With a strong academic background and international exposure, Mr. Kharche brought a distinctive design sensibility that balanced modernist principles with a deep respect for context. His approach, characterized by clarity, functionality, and understated elegance, set a new benchmark for design thinking in the region. Under his leadership, the office undertook a wide array of projects spanning institutional campuses, industrial complexes, commercial spaces, and residential developments—each thoughtfully crafted to reflect purpose and place.
By 1979, the regional office evolved into an independent practice, “Kharche & Associates”, embodying Mr. Kharche’s vision of a design studio that harmonizes tradition with innovation. Rooted in values of integrity, collaboration, and sustainability, the firm structured itself around three core divisions: architecture, engineering, and administration. This multidisciplinary framework allowed for seamless integration of design and execution, supported by a team of skilled architects, engineers, and expert consultants. Upholding a commitment to thoughtful simplicity, the firm emphasizes user-centric and environmentally responsible design solutions. Over sixty years ago, a young man from a Marathi village set out to study architecture. Mr. Kharche began at Sir J.J. School of Architecture in Mumbai, later graduating with honors from the AA School in London. He gained international experience working for six years at Architects Co-Partnership, a leading British firm known for modernist design.
Returning to India in 1960, he collaborated with Charles Correa and Fred Taylor on landmark projects such as the Kovalam Beach Resort and Belapur housing. In 1964, he joined Kothari & Associates in New Delhi, where he led the design of Oberoi’s first international five-star hotel, as well as major institutional works including AIIMS and the LIC building—contributing significantly to India’s post-independence architectural landscape.
In circa 1990, our esteemed founder, Shri S. A. Kharche, was proudly conferred the prestigious “Excellence in Architecture” award by the distinguished Governor of Tamil Nadu, Bhishma Narain Singh, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field.

Prashanth S. Kharche is the Chief Architect and Planner of Kharche & Associates, one of South India’s leading architectural firms. With a strong focus on modern design principles, he has spearheaded the creation of large-scale commercial, IT/ITES, hospitality, residential, and institutional projects across India.
His extensive experience includes designing and executing architectural and engineering projects for prestigious clients such as Godrej Properties Ltd., DLF Ltd., Brigade Group, TVS Emerald, Tata Consultancy Services, etc., among others. Under his leadership, Kharche & Associates was honored with the “Excellence in Architecture” award by the Governor of Tamil Nadu in 2001.
